Saturday 2s vs Horley

We finally got back to winning ways on Saturday and, in so doing, finished 6th out of ten in the division. It was our first win since the 13th of July, those days when we were thinking about promotion! How times changed! Harley were a bit of a shower. A car got lost en route and was a mere "ten minutes away" for half an hour. They won the toss and decided to bat and then a few minutes later decided to bowl. Chaos. Overs were lost out of the game, which had become 41 over per side. This did not seem much punishment for their poor time keeping. Macca and I opened, Macca being indulged after many weeks of nagging. Like all experienced fathers I eventually relented to such pester power. They bowled tidily enough and there was some caution in our game as we'd not got a batting point for weeks. I got 48 and JP, Hensh and Fents all got twenty odd with a variety of methods. We made it to 178ao in the last over. Pat McGahan's younger brother Joe hit a bright 18 to help us get there. I had let it be known at drinks that I would be holding Horley to a hitherto unused rule in the book that even though we would get 41 overs, they would only get back from us the number of overs they had bowled by 4pm. They would get 38. If anyone thinks I misread the rule book please let me know! And at 78 for one, they were looking good for it but James was really tight which encouraged me to get Macca off and Fents on, which really tied them up. There was plenty of cat and mouse and flight and guile in a really tight passage of play before both top guns fell sweeping, one top edging to Paul just behind (we'll gloss over his earlier drop of a sitter, his sun hat supposedly obscuring his view) and Joe pulled off a blinder, diving in on the line at deep backward square. How proud Mrs McGahan must be of them both. Barry replaced James, kept the pressure up and nicked a wicket, scored board pressure mounted and their youngsters wilted. So, a mid table finish from a squad that had 46 players this season of whom only ten played more than ten games. A real squad effort, many answered a late call and we always had 11 men and five bowlers even though holidays thinned out the squad. Thanks to all those who played this year, I think we had fun and played in a good spirit (I think, but there were times when the oppo did not show face in our bar). Marginally better batting would have perhaps rustled up a win or two that would've got us up the table but no complaints. |
