Putney pitch saw its first game for 2009 on Saturday the 25th when two mixed 1st and 2nd X1 teams battled it out for the first time in a while. With the unquantified strengths of the seven or eight new faces in the game, it would have been incredibly hard to put your money on either side. One thing you could have put your money on however was Racch losing the toss and being sent in to bat. Good-Old Nick and the new comer Matt put on a handy start with Nick making a quick fire 20 before holding out for 21. From then on we had a mixed score card with Racch steadying the ship with a nice 47, Chinny, as he does, got clean bowled by GP for a golden duck, and Owen, coming in late in the innings, put on 33. Perhaps a surprise to some, but the new comers, most notably Sam, put on some handy scores and showed us all that it doesn’t actually take that long to get used to the Putney pitch. With Sam and Alex accounting for 63 of the total score, we were finally bowled out for 204, which was a challenging total, given our bowling line up. After we rested and had our superb teas, supplied by GP’s better half, Chip and Will F-K took to the crease. You could see just how frightened Chip was facing up to Will, jumping all over the place and not getting the bat anywhere near the ball for the first 5 overs. Ben came on at the other end and troubled both with his patented “bowl on the side of the pitch and watch it come back in†balls, which were a delight to watch when they worked. Holding them tight for the first 15 overs, the unfortunately didn’t manage to break the partnership (which was about 5 or 6 after 15 overs), but put us into a great position going forward. Will F-K showed great poise not only with the ball in the first innings, but also with the bat, but unfortunately he was playing a test match on the day and was out for 9. Chip went on to make a handy 24, but was out when he tried to play a scoring shot, suggesting to the rest of us that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. Just like old times GP and Scotty put on some solid runs, Scotty making a quick 50 and GP putting on half his age before getting out. On the bowling stage Matt Rickard showed great form with the ball picking up two wickets quite cheaply and was supported by Owen also picking up a quick two. The game was a tight one, a dog fight, but the 1st team just came over the top to win with half a dozen balls to spare. All in all we should have a strong season this year as the new comers look strong in many difference areas of the game and should add strength to a team that performed very well in the latter half of last year’s season. |
