A real coming of age performance by Soham Bendre won us this game with a terrific 6-33 spell. But that he had a target at which to bowl was down to a decent batting performance led by his Dad’s fine 81. Sam Sud (35) and Billy Pople (34) got us off to an absolute flier against a spirited attack, Sam in particular dabbing down to third man. Billy was strong off his legs but they both threw it away. Amogh (81) took it on helped by Rohit and Sam Mazurek (39) who is putting together a decent run of scores now (inner thigh muscle permitting). Amogh plays so unobtrusively, at his own pace (which ain’t bad), the occasional big shot to show who’s the boss. To reach fifty, his forward defensive split two fielders and kept them interested all the way to the boundary. 288 on the board. Sid Asokan bowled without luck. This feller can bat too. If he can catch also he can be the new Tush (Chinny’s fielding disqualifies him). James Peter’s span his web (2-29) and very soon the pressure was on St James. And Soham exploited that. They had to take chances, he had to keep it on the stumps and the pressure just rose and rose. A great catch by Sam Maz at mid off and a decent one by Amogh supported Soham and there were also three bowled out, each clipping the top of off. Terrific stuff and testament to Soham’s new found confidence and strength. We had seen that in his batting at Teddington to turn a game in our favour and in his fielding too. Now Soham knows where to put the ball and is strong enough to put in 8 overs on the trot. And now he has his reward. He just asks the questions with each ball and it is up to the batsmen to provide the answers. Soham was everyone’s man of the match. |
