It’s not every day that you get to play in an inaugural match for a new cricket team, but that was the position the Saturday 4th XI who made the short trip to Barn Elms to play Old Ruts with an inclement forecast and high optimism of continued play on the astro wicket. We arrived person by person, with Sud taking advantage of the free nets to hone his batting in sliders. The opposition arrived en masse, and having won the first toss for our fledgling team, we batted. Sam’s practice was clearly worthwhile, with a rapid 28 mostly square of the wicket. His partner Momin was unlucky to get a good ball early, and this followed the pattern of our innings – there for a good time not a long time – save for the redoubtable Girish (50) who may have gone on further had we actually let him know when he hit 50. We managed 208, with the last 35 runs coming courtesy of an enthralling last wicket stand between Ajay (15) and Savan (2*). A swift 20 minute turnaround was reluctantly accepted, and the unprepared scurried off to the corner shops and delis of Barnes for their food. A varied mix returned, and between Guinness for some and delicious Italian meat sandwiches for others we took the field in good spirits. These rose further when Ajay induced an edge from his opening ball, which Ollie did very well to grasp at slip, admitting after that the sandwich had taken its toll and he wasn’t exactly ready. The half time strawberries Ajay had consumed had done the trick, his opening spell claimed four and the returning three yielded the illusive fifth via silly mid on of all places – 5-17, MotM and Old Ruts on the ropes. What we hadn’t realised was that 10 and 11 were dynamite. We wrung the changes, using 9 bowlers in the process, but their 87-9 became 175-9 at the end of 40, with the last three overs hastened through by the promised rain arriving on cue. The last ball of their innings went skywards, and be it rain or general tiredness, a mix up at cover left their last pair unbeaten – aged 14 and 17 greater things surely lie ahead. As the opening performance of a new team that is likely to play few and far between, this game was a pleasure to take part in and will hopefully result in a rematch with Old Ruts at some point in a future – a great group who gamely came back to the clubhouse in the deluge. |
