A Wibberley, a Wobberley, We all fall down. Cricket. What a mistress she is, how we’ve all missed her, how we’ve all fawned over her return, how cruel a temptress she can be. Arriving early on a Sunday morning with a 9% chance of showers to a newly refurbished club house, (cracking job by the way to all involved), live test cricket on and two excitable captains preparing for the day ahead (Jarmola and Beedle) - things seemed like they were going to go the way of the every-man and nothing could dampen my spirits, until Amogh showed up and added some balance to the equation by reminding us everyone was annoying and Woking was bloody miles away, before he trundled off into the mist to lead his 3s into battle. Off we went to set the pitch up, the poles were a bit easier than usual, we did have the proud owner of a shiny new doctorate in our midsts though in the form of the young (ish) Dr. Sarab Sethi - and he managed the whole thing with aplomb. Unfortunately he wasn’t keeping an eye on the debutant Conor Martin, (standing in for his twin brother, who’d slammed his hand in a car door earlier that day..), who was laying out one of the smallest boundaries in the history of club cricket, and Conor-James Rea had to be told to bring them in, much to his avid dismay. I’m not sure a toss actually took place, but we batted first either way and Wibberley and Martin Mathews got us off to a flier, the ball was travelling to old all parts, and in some style, there was timing, finesse, textbook cover drives and not too much running between the wickets. It was 48-0 off 6, when Wibbs decided he’d had enough of enjoying himself and stuck a wide long-hop straight up in the air to open the floodgates. Martin got himself a few more before losing his bails and almost managed to second top score, but extras got the better of him by a solitary run. Sethi came and went without troubling the scorers and was clearly to distracted by regaling us all with his weekend takeaways: • Pizza • Dhansak • Pizza • Dhansak • Thai Green Curry • Saveloy and Chips Some hot, some cold, no-one remembers, it was a great story, and all just a few days after an MRI on his heart. In the words of Barry Fry, ‘You can’t keep a good man down’. Nick got 7, CJR looked in great nick before getting himself out on 16, he maintains he did the right thing, JJ didn’t agree - the debate lasted far too long at the bar afterwards. The skipper himself got 10, Gus ran himself out hilariously on 9, Hannaford got the same off about 12 overs, Sculler managed 6, Brown ran out of partners and was unbeaten on an exquisitely played 7* and the debutant got himself cleaned up for a golden. A truly shite innings all round and collapsed from 48-0 to 134 all out. Tea was a non-event, checked some Premier League scores, checked the Test Match, smoked some fags, a can of Dark Fruits was the doing the rounds, ya-da-ya-da-ya-da, same old, same old. Then the cliches began flowing, ‘they’ve got to bat on it too’, ‘early wickets and we’re in’, ‘just keep it tight’, ‘do the basics’. We ignored them all. Sculler started us off with a couple of 10 ball overs before bringing it back and bowling like a completely different bloke in the next 3, Conor the Debutant bowled reasonably well, but went for more than a run a ball, Nick and Callum were tight but never overly threatening. A wicket a piece for Nick, Callum and Scull and the game was over. They had a big lad who slapped it about opening up and he got himself 60/70*, put it in the air a lot, on another day we get him early, a chance goes to hand, he misses a straight one... by this time I was drowning in cliches and was ready for a drink. We headed back to the bar to drown our sorrows and enjoy a drink with the oppo, no wait, we didn’t, they took their victory and scarpered. Great day though, wonderful to be back playing the game we all love with the people we sort of like. M.P.S.G.A.F.K.A.C.M.S.T.B.M.O.T.D - Wibbs for a lovely straight 6. Exactly the same as the last time I wrote a match report on my debut. Bit of useless knowledge for the almanac lovers out there. TFC - Sarab Sethi. DDJ - Sculler gifting the oppo 10% of the target in wides in the first 3 overs. MOTM - Wibbs for 33 and a catch. Low bar. |
