In the sole Women’s Ashes test match lasts week, several stalwarts of the game reached 50 for the first time: Alyssa Healy; Meg Lanning; Nat Sciver; Amy Jones (on debut). Even Jimmy Anderson was delighted with his only professional half century against India in 2014. Clearly reaching this milestone is important in cricket. In Putney Sunday’s 2nd XI match against the Bricklayers, the aim of reaching 50 was also a feature, although, as one might expect, with much more failure than the examples above. On a gloriously green pitch and an outstandingly overcast day, our supreme South African captain won the toss and elected to bat. After the short game last time, which involved another twenty20 afterwards, it seemed the sensible thing to do. Things looked secure with Yas and Gus looking set, only for Yas and Chris to fall quickly, leaving their dibbly-dobbly opening bowler on a hat-trick. Noman resolutely blocked out the next ball, and then, a few balls later, resolutely strode down the wicket to challenge Tycho’s LBW decision. 34-3 and it was Beedle this time who was asking for a post-match twenty20. But Gus, steadfast in his determination not to lose to Bricklayers twice, dug in with Sheva to put on a 94 run partnership and get us back in the game. Unfortunately, due to a ball that swung in and stayed low, Gus would be the first to miss out on the 50 run milestone, out for a well-played and vital 47. Bricklayers rallied and quickly dispatched with Tycho and Ajay, at which point, our captain promoted himself up the order in search of his own personal record - he was on 49 runs for the club (in four seasons) and wanted the elusive 50th. A few balls later and Beedle is still waiting, caught behind for a duck with uproarious laughter from his team on the boundary - Gus has the video if anyone wants it. Wickets kept falling, but Sheva managed to reach 91 with some clean hitting and several fantastic straight sixes. He only missed out on his century because he was desperately trying to keep yours truly off strike (wise decision) and was run out. 187 all out and it was our turn to bowl. Some steady bowling from the openers put pressure on the openers until one flashed outside off and caught a thick edge. The ball had four written all over it, but Yas has other ideas, pulling off a Stokes-esque catch at gully after the ball had already passed him. The batsman even shook his hand. Contender for champagne moment of the season. Regular wickets fell on a dying pitch and after the other bowlers shared wickets between them (including a brielliant 2-23 from the cheeseman) Ben “I’m a slow bowler so I can bowl second change and rip through the tail” Peddie took 3-19 to finish them off. 103 all out and Putney won by 84 runs. Standard retirement to the bar followed to hear about the drama from the 1sts. Yet there are rumours that a drunken South African still roams the streets of Putney to this day, searching for the run that he can’t find. Will he get it next week? Tune in to find out. MOTM: Sheva for his 91 Champagne: Yas for his incredible catch DDJ: Beedle for promoting himself up the order and getting a duck TFC: Tycho |
