Forever to be known as the James Peters Match, this was a game in which lamentable Putney batting was redeemed by his fine 52* at number 10 followed by 4 for not many bowling his increasingly loopy off spin. Classic James. Chaldon are a shower. But a cheery shower nevertheless. Their first to arrive opened their pavilion 5 minutes before the start and they took the field with six players. Their final player turned up after 35 minutes after which we found our way to 41-6. Including a run out. In the second over. When they had four fielders. I mean, come **on**! The pitch was hard but poor but Rikki, Amogh and Tushar, each full of runs all season managed only 2 between them. Richard J (12) and Ollie P (24) hauled us to 90-8. Which brought James at ten and Doug (33*) at nine together and there they remained for 23 overs putting on a club record unbroken 85 runs for the 9th wicket. At risk of being trite, they did this by not getting out, keeping the ball on the deck and playing straight. James was the more ambitious: an early six in to the sight screen, fours clipped sweetly off his legs (who does that better?), the occasional slog sweep and, lo, some quick singles. The initiative was wrested back, Chaldon resistance broken and a sense that we had enough in this pitch at 150. We got to 175 and a disappointed Brian peeled off his pads, unused. Sam Furber bowled a mean opening spell and Brian did his thing at just under four an over, superbly backed up by Tushar at long on where he ran in for two low catches. And James was not done. The slower he bowled the more he spun his web. 5-8 last week, 4-18 this. He’s on a roll and, for us, he won this match. |
