There was a lot to like about this game. Obviously winning bigly helped but the manner in which we did so is worth reflecting upon. We batted first and Doug (16) and Rolf (29) put up a score. 48 at three an over. No big deal but enough to blunt their optimism and tire out their front line. The next 50 came in 13 overs as Amogh (an unobtrusive 51) and Tush (12) pushed it on. As they say, if you thought it was a bit slow, try 30-4. Anyway, Amogh played really nicely for his score and it fell to Tom Dalrymple (45) and Phil Milbourne (24*) to really push things along. Bowling teams tire, their worst bowlers on at the end. You need resources (wickets in hand) to be able to exploit that. And we did, 100 scored in the last 11 overs. Great straight hitting from TD off only 28 balls. 218 is hard to chase at Putney. And so it proved. Brian did his job, Tom Seaman especially so with maiden after maiden. The pressure told and JP, bowling sooo slowly but with a good line was able to mop up with 5-8. Supported by smart catching all round, especially by Phil at square leg, anticipating and move smartly and then diving to snuff out their most dangerous batter, beyond whom they had little. 63 all out for a giant win. |
