More or less everything went right in our game against Horsley & Send. Based on two close encounters last year, we were expecting a tight game and a tough battle. But as the scorecard shows, it ended up a very lop-sided affair. On a personal note, the day started rather badly when my foot was run over by a sightscreen, and then Tush Junior showed me up with an impressive display of bowling variations. He can bowl a chinaman to order, so aged 2, he is already much better than the Sundays squad. Amogh won the toss and we batted. Doug departed quite early, caught behind to a good bit of bowling. I, the other opener, managed to overcome vertigo and knuckled down to see off the new ball. I was joined by Amogh who seemed to be playing a different game. He was swatting boundaries left, right and centre, while I was meekly patting singles. Amogh passed fifty in quick time. Now feeling a bit ashamed by my dogged efforts, I slogged across the line and was bowled. 105-2 at drinks. Josh, ever pleasing to watch, got in but then got out. Amogh ploughed on. On 89 he was pinned LBW and I, the unlucky umpire, raised a quick finger with a huge dollop of annoyance. 189-4 and plenty of overs left. Sheva “Let me tell you more embarrassing truths about Saad’s boyhood” Dasgupta joined Tush, who was already humming. Boundaries came thick and fast off the blade of Tush. A tired Horsley began to despair. Catches went down, bowlers lost hope and heads dropped. Passing his 50, Tush confided to me “I’m feeling a bit sorry for them you know.” But obviously not that sorry, as he went on to pummel fours and sixes to all parts. Down the ground, over cow, pulls, drives, slogs, the lot. After Sheva was bowled by their geriatric fifth change, Phil “Freddie Flintoff” Milbourne came in to enjoy the Tush inspired fireworks as he galloped into the 90s. We entered the final over on 278-5. “300 would be nice” I murmed to Phil, slightly tongue in cheek. With Amogh yelling out Tush’s score in Hindi, he made sure of the three figures by whacking one more down the ground. Blimey, that was superb. Merciless, relentless hitting. Oh and we passed 300, thanks to Tush spanking one to wide one off for four more. A superlative Brian tea followed - the seasoning in the potato salad was a stroke of genius - and we set on the hunt for victory. Hugo, on best behaviour with girlfriend and parents / in-laws spectating, bowled with discipline. He got an early breakthrough, cleaning up an opener, then followed up by bullying Horsley’s young umpire into giving an LBW. Brian, at the other end, was beneficiary of some liquid work behind the sticks by Josh, completing a superb stumping as the bat overbalanced. Lewis came on and made immediate in-roads. His first ball, a lovely outswinger, was caught well by Tush at second slip. Third ball: another outswinger, caught by Josh. Fifth ball, see above. Triple-wicket maiden - marred only by the incredibly lame send off for the third wicket. Tom S, replacing Hugo, bowled tightly and without luck. With Horsley now determined to dig in and scrap for everything, the batsmen weren’t offering many chances. Lewis’ spell went slightly awry, including a very high no-ball over everyone’s head, one bounce into the boundary. I came on but couldn’t con the bats into chipping one in the air. It was up to Phil to finish the job. With good hustle and bustle he cleaned up the tail with wicket-to-wicket bowling. Doug took a sharp catch and slip. His celebration was much better than last week; he went for a sort of mic-drop and hard stare into middle-distance. Victory by a massive 239 runs. MotM: Tush - it could only be - for his 106*. Mug of the Match: Me, for numerous infractions, viz: not hitting a boundary in my 28, giving Amogh LBW, but most heinous of all, putting the shower temperature up to high. The Tushar Bhakre “How on Earth did you do that?” Award: Josh for his rapid leg-side stumping. |
