As a new captain, you dream of your first victory, and you wonder will it happen today. Although today of all days. I woke up feeling dangerous. I was ready to annihilate the opponents. Ready for battle. Unfortunately there were no Budweiser fridges awaiting my victory to be opened, like the Cleveland browns over the New York Jets. (Index at the bottom explaining) as Baker Mayfield exclaimed when he led the browns to their first victory. “I woke up feeling dangerous” As did I. Arriving at the ground full of hope guts and determination, to find Sam Sud had been there since 11:30 after walking there from Putney. Only to be told we are using one ball, and then subsequently losing the toss. Bugger my overzealous confidence took a pounding. Of course, they bowled first with the new ball. Well it did not work out too well for them, as the patisserie was open early today. Sending Sam and Callum in to open up the batting, clearly “The long walk to Hook” had not tired the keen Sam Sud out as he was batting superbly, with Callum anchoring the other end and letting the young man do his thing. First to fall was Callum who was caught on a soft chip to point. He came back sat down and exclaimed “What a terrible way to go out.” In strolls Mr Ben Peddie for a long stint watching Sud push the ball around. Then getting bowled shortly after. In strolls Yas Ali to add a tidy and well rounded 27. There was a short collapse of three quick wickets Sam for 32, Noman for 4 and Seaman for 3. In comes the debut keeper Bickford. To smack a quick 30 dispatching the pie salesman to all corners of the ground. A short cameo from Ingram of 13 added to the lower order demise. The only highlight was me taking on the fielders arm to the danger end for a 2 which I lost. 151 set up for them to chase. Here we go it’s Putney’s time to shine. It’s a 40 over ball, ready to swing passed the fishing outside edge. It’s Jack Bickford a Scientist behind the stumps, on Friday he was analysing human feces for worms. (His job, head to the end for context) 3 balls into Jack the scientists keeping stint. As predicted a ball would hang outside off ready to be hit but not really. The batsman hangs his edge out there and snicks one, to the new Sunday’s keeper, who took it comfortably. The dangerous feeling returned. In from the far side was Rob Taylor, fresh off a night that included shots at 2am. Standard Sunday behaviour and with that a good first over. Confident he is over his hangover goes in for another one and this is a 10 ball over, that consisted of 4 wide’s. So, seems the hangover needed more time to wear off and he took himself off. In comes the particle scientist Mark Smith. The particles in his arm were firing on all cylinders like the large hadron collider in CERN. Clipping off stump and sending the bails flying. 2 gone!!! This is fantastic, those bud light fridges are going to open. Here comes number three full of confidence and exuberance, oh how that is going to be shattered like the top of his off stump. Delivered by yours truly followed up by a Stuart broad style send off. Looking mighty dangerous today. That’s 3/23 off 6.3 Full of confidence, in strides white pads the whitest pads you will ever see, he was there a while even with the constant chirping about his white pads did not dissuade him at all. In comes Rich Ingram to continue the relentless right arm over, swinging deliveries. Then one is snicked back to Jack for another confident take behind the stumps. Back to the clubhouse you go. What a day it’s turning out to be, 4/46 off 14 overs. Clearly, we all woke up feeling dangerous. In from the other end came Tom Seaman steaming in with more relentless pace, he had all the wheels. We kept getting worked around the field by the keeper and his very tall partner, who was a threat to the boundary and the victory. We needed him gone ASAP. This intense partnership was interrupted by a bunch of youths who were using the nearby goal posts as a jungle gym much to the dismay of the local rozzer umpiring at square leg, who took off with badge in hand after the disobedient youths. After this interruption it was back to business. Trying to get the tall boy off the pitch (not a beer, the lad bashing us around, beers are always welcomed on the pitch.) GONE caught! The tall man was gone. Caught by Callum! That’s a big wicket one we needed. Proceeding to make short work of the tail. Then the openers came back on to finish the game and get in the bar, it was late and getting dark lets get out of here. Rob was feeling fresh and his hangover had subsided. Steaming in and bowling on the money again, wickets tumbling and a huge sigh of relief. That’s not a thanks for coming for me. 2 wickets away from a 5 for! 2 overs left! I can do this! Unfortunately, it was not meant to be last ball of the last over missed leg stump by a centimetre to which I fell on the floor clutching my head and disappointed, then the realisation was that we had won. I regard a good team win, as one where its difficult to choose a Thanks For Coming. I really do not think there was one. Every single player contributed in some way out there and it was a great team win. The TFC award goes to the oppo umpire who called a short run for his own batsman and gave an LBW off Ben’s bowling that was basically an apology of a decision. The ball was not quite a moon ball but was close and just at the right time dipped to smack the batsman on the thigh and he was given. MOTM: Beedle for 4 for 29 Champagne Moment: Jacks keeping DDJ: Noman for going out to bat with no gloves. Index: 1* The Cleveland browns had not won a game in 635 days and QB Baker Mayfield when interviewed after beating the NY Jets, exclaimed “I woke up feeling dangerous” Bud Light had fridges of beer around the city of Cleveland that would open when they got their first win. 2* Jack is trying to cure disease by examining worms in human faeces. Enthralling work I am sure |
