At an ancient Roman banquet, it was customary to vomit in the middle of a meal to spur yourself on to greater achievements. Never was this principal more relevant than in Sunday’s match against Hook and Southborough. But I get ahead of myself. With the prospect of home-made curry for tea, Putney’s Sunday team were very happy to lose the toss and be asked to bowl. Leon and Beedle opened, myself and Ruhban first change. Smiles started to fade as the opening partnership approached triple figures. “It’s going to be one of those days” Leon rather dejectedly proclaimed to me. If by that he meant that we would see an inspired over from Hoagie, breaking an 89 run partnership, and a glorious return spell from Beedle which included 3-0 off 7 balls (the pre-match pints had clearly worn off), then the Men’s Fitness Sexiest Man of the Year 1972 was indeed correct! Some tight death bowling followed and we were set 208 to win. Fortuna fortibus favet - Fortune favours the brave. And indeed we must have been brave that day to be so blessed with yet another fabulous tea supplied by Leon and family. However, as in Ancient Rome, one man over-gorged himself and would need some mid-innings relief before continuing. The openers we incredibly gracious. Rather than hog the lime-light, they selflessly threw away their wickets to allow others to obtain unfathomable glory. A quick 50 from Ockwell got us on track, but a flurry of mid-order wickets meant that the game was in the balance. The curry-stuffed figure of JJ was our only hope, much like Obi-Wan Kenobi if he sweated madras sauce. A brief visit to the club house during drinks and the employment of an Ancient Roman practice saw him come back with renewed vigour, and with a series of late cuts and karate kicks to knock the ball away from the stumps, he saw us home with an impressive 79 not out. The Saturday 2s don’t stand a chance against such a professional outfit! |
