Furber’s five-for foils Roehampton Local derbies often inspire moments of brilliance, frustration and controversy – the SW15 Cup proved to be no different. Skipper Devon Ebersohn won the toss and elected to bowl first. Gary Peters and Ben “Surrey” Williamson provided a stern test for Roehampton’s opening pair. Surrey soon claimed Putney’s first wicket of the afternoon, forcing Roehampton’s no. 1 to nick behind; straight into the gloves of skipper Ebersohn. Putney’s first bowling change provided the game’s stand-out moment of brilliance. Sam Furber produced a fine display of bowling in which he rearranged the stumps of Roehampton’s middle order. Furber claimed a five-for, pinpointing the leg stump with astute accuracy, and in the process dismissed Roehampton’s no. 5 and 7 for ducks. Debutante Lewis Hill chipped in with a wicket from the other end, a simple catch for Bam Bam in the covers, to dismiss Roehampton’s no. 3. Come the drinks break, Putney had taken control of the game. Although the away side were about the experience their moment of frustration. Roehampton’s no. 8 entered the fray and soon found fortune outside the off stump. After posting a half century, a returning Peters soon signalled an end to his spell of big hitting, as Roehampton’s no. 8 spooned one to Andrew Hyland at deep mid-off. Peters and Vish Chandrasekhar then proceeded to polish off the tail. Roehampton set Putney a target of 153 to win, and after a quick turnaround, Putney’s batsmen set about the task in hand. Piers Jackson and Hyland got off to a quick start., with the former enjoying several late dabs to boundary at third man. Jackson eventually fell to Roehampton’s opener, nicking behind and departing the field with 33 runs from 31 deliveries. Ebersohn and Hyland then combined for a partnership of 26 runs, before the former also met his fate with a nick behind to Roehampton’s keeper. Hyland, who had anchored the first half of Putney’s innings, soon followed his compatriot to the pavilion, bowled by the Roehampton spinner. The promise of some big-hitting from Putney’s no. 5 Bam Bam failed to materialise. He was stumped off Roehampton’s spinner, with a member of the opposing side questioning whether Bam Bam had “lost his mojo” after the match. We doubt it – watch this space. Putney, now 90-5 off 30 overs, required 63 runs to claim the SW15 Cup. The task fell to Joe “Pork” Sworder and Saad Hannan. The two set about taking apart the bowling of the home side with considerable success. Pork filled his belly with several boundaries, leaving several Roehampton bowlers scratching their heads. Meanwhile, Hannan also plundered the Roehampton attack, cleverly working the ball in between the gaps in the field. Putney now required 24 runs from 3 overs and seemed within touching distance of victory. After Hannan’s dismissal in the 38th over, Chandrasekhar steadied the ship and alongside Pork, manoeuvred Putney into a position where they required 10 runs from the last over to win. From the home side’s perspective, a moment of controversy tainted the penultimate ball. Regardless, Putney required a single from the final ball of the match to tie and reclaim the SW15 Cup, and two runs to win. Pork pumped the game’s final ball over mid-wicket for a single, and only a superb piece of fielding on the boundary denied him a second run. The game was tied and Putney took the SW15 Cup home. |
