Yaw, it was a good win". Devon "#YOLO" Eberson summed it up nicely moments after the Saturday 1’s claimed our first victory of the season. It was an emphatic 92 run win, sealed by a good team performance with both bat and ball. The first hour was a little tricky, however. After skipper PJ lost the loss, we were inserted on a green top, which, combined with some unpredictable bowling, made runs hard to come by. Hylander and new boy John “Hot Toddy” (at 2 and 3 respectively) were patient, but fell trying to force the issue. Bam Bam’s arrival made a mockery of any notion that the pitch was a bit rummy. He swatted his first ball for a big six over mid-wicket, and stroked the second down the ground for four more. Bammers’ typical élan clearly rubbed off onto PJ, who suddenly found scoring much easier. Both fell after making decent contributions of 30+. Joe “witty nickname tbc” Hopkins and Dev played nicely to keep the scoreboard ticking over, the latter falling for a well-made 30. “Nice” Tush played six and out, but there were useful partnerships right down to the end, with GP (28*) Saad, and Ben “Kane” Williamson all getting in on the act. 182 looked a good score. An hour into Horley’s innings, it was made to look a very, very good score. GP, now in his 23rd season for Putney (although scholars debate whether he has played for longer), displayed the sort of discipline only Buddhist monks can muster. Hardly a single ball delivered in his spell was off target. Nipping out two early wickets, Horley’s innings never got going. At the other end, “Coinpurse” Merchant failed the muster the same zen-like control, and was replaced by Ben “Ten” Williamson, who soon had the ball nibbling all over the shop. A shelled chance at second slip denied him a wicket, but he followed up with a stone dead lbw. Joe’s introduction into the attack brought the game to its near-conclusion. A first-class spell of 9-3-12-5 wrecked Horley’s middle order. And, combined with spin from the other end – some of it good (Toddy), some of it not-so-good (Bammers) – no Horley batsman could make his mark. One stuck at his task gamely, but no doubt realised the utter futility of the situation as the procession of wickets continued. Saad claimed the final wicket, and, after handshakes and back slaps all round, we retired the clubhouse tired but happy. Rolf "Ralf" Merchant reporting from Putney Common |
